Obviously the rut is the best time to get a buck. Here in Virginia it tends to be around the last two weeks of November.
What's worked for me the last 2 season was hunting fields in between thickets. I caught a 8 point and 6 point this year that was late getting back to bed.:)

I have always felt if I could find the does. The bucks will would be there.

I always like to set up on a travel cooridoor to a food plot. If it is on a field edge I will set up around 25 yards inside the timber. Typically the mature bucks will skirt the field just inside the timber searching for does.....

I agree with Deer Predator. Setting up inside the timber, close to a field is a great place to take a mature buck. Got one here in Texas doing just that on Friday the 13th in November. He was about 6 1/2 years old. I was set up 40 yards from the edge of a field that also had a barbed wire fence along the wooded edge. This forces the deer to travel inside the woods. 2 years ago I drug several small trees and placed them at a 45 degree angle next to the fence to force the deer to move deeper in the woods towards me. This was done at the thickest spot so it created a pinch point right next to my lock on stand. I have shot 3 bucks there in 2 years; all at 10 yards or less. Kinda cool if you think about it!
The largest buck was shot at 7 yards. This was my huge 8 point I got on Friday the 13th this year. I really love this spot to because I do not have a feeder or anything there to attract the deer; it is just a perfect little funnel I hunt from the last of Oct to the middle of Nov.
